Mike and Mary's Story

We're Mike and Mary and there are definitely two F's in our blood: France and Food! In some ways we are food tourists, working as we have in Ireland, the US and Europe, as cooks, chefs, caterers and everything else in between!

Our Food Story

Our Food Story

Michael was born on Dublin and worked in his father's fruit and vegetable business, providing fresh produce to hospitals, restaurants and pubs.
As for me, Mary, I am also a Dubliner and after meeting Mike in the late 1970s, we got married in 1980 and had three boys. Maybe it was an '80s thing but we decided to move to Dallas (home of TV baddie JR Ewing) and we worked in catering for a spell. In professional kitchens, they say if you can't stand the heat.... Well, we can tell you, it was hot, hot, hot in Texas.

I suppose we missed the Irish rain too much, so we moved back to Ireland with the kids, running a restaurant and takeaway in Charleville, Cork.
After completing chef training, our food horizons widened, we taught trainee chefs, worked in many different restaurants and hotels and we even managed the food operations for a global tech brand.

Our 'Semi-Retirement'

Our 'Semi-Retirement'

France happened quite suddenly. After a fabulous holiday there in 2008, we both felt that it would be a good place to semi-retire. That resulted in buying a Gite business and for the last seven years, we've provided relaxing holidays for our mainly British and Irish guests.

So, the semi-retirement bit never materialized! But the satisfaction of seeing all our visitors enjoying the sunshine, the lovely gardens and pool, the delicious food and the many local attractions, is more than enough. We have chickens(2) so our younger guest have the trill of collecting fresh eggs and feeding the girls.

We like to think they all leave Les Petits Coins relaxed and happy.
