Discover! The Region

The sunny region of Poitou Charentes and the Charentes Maritime 'department' is home to many holiday gites and apartments like ours. It is an area that includes the town of Cognac and the city of Bordeaux. It's a mecca for beach and outdoor lovers, fine wines and champagne enthusiasts, foodies and those with a passion for collecting antiques.

Wine

Wine

With some of the world's most famous vineyards on our holiday gites doorstep, we encourage all of our visitors to explore the Bordeaux region.

There are vineyards just minutes from the house and some of the most famous labels in the world are just a short drive south towards Bordeaux.

Blaye is just 30 minutes from Semoussac and tours and wine tastings at family-owned vineyards and more famous labels take place every day in the summer.

Cognac

Cognac

The town with the famous name is a 45-minute drive from your holiday gites in Semoussac.

As well as being home to some of the most famous Cognac brands in the world such as the Irish-orginating Hennessey and Martel, it is also a lovely town in which to take the family shopping, go for a stroll along the old quays or for a bite to eat.

A by-product of the Cognac distilling process is a local drink called Pineau which is on sale throughout the region. Local Pineau makers also conduct daily tours.

Food/Local Markets

Food/Local Markets

We love food (obviously!) and where better than France to stock up on seafood, fresh vegetables, beautiful fruit, meats, sausages, jams, honey and much more.

Most local towns have a daily market and we are more than happy to let you know the exact time and days they are on in different places.

Why not combine a day out at the golden beaches of Royan with a trip to the city's fabulous weekend market. It's full of sights, smells and all sorts of treats.

Beaches

Beaches

Your holiday gites is just a 20 minute drive to some of the most beautiful coastline in France, known as the Cote Sauvage or Coast of Beauty.

The town of St Georges De Didonne is one of our favourites with almost 3 kilometres of unspoiled sands and sparkling warm waters. There are plenty of fast, inexpensive places to eat and drink and marvellous beach facilities for children.

The Villages

The Villages

Whether it's the local market, old churches or a walk through quite little streets, there are many beautiful villages within the vicinity of your Semoussac holiday home.

One of our all-time must-sees is the walled village of Talmont Sur Gironde, a protected area that tourists are only permitted to enter on foot. The village, which appears to be 'perched' on a rocky outcrop, is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France") association.

The village is home to the landmark Church of St Radegonde, built in 1094.

Antiques

Antiques

We love old things and enjoy nothing more than a trip out to a market or a 'brocante' to spot an old piece of furniture or a household item that may come in use to us or our guests. The area around Semoussac, Mirambeau and beyond towards Bordeaux and La Rochelle is an antiques lover's paradise.

Brocantes take place all year round and we can advise on the ones not to be missed. With sunshine all year round, why not plan a bespoke antiques break - in between looking after you during your stay, we might even pop along to see the collectables and offer a word of advice!
